Harriet Fan, Finance Graduate

Harriet-FanUniversity of York – Mathematics

When did you join the programme?
July 2013

What is it like to work at TJX Europe?
It is quite difficult to describe what it is like to work at TJX Europe without mentioning the company’s culture. Everyone is supportive and approachable and it is obvious that people are passionate about your career progression. There is a very friendly, open culture which is clearly seen across all levels of the business. A great example of this is the Charity Abseil I organised this year for Comic Relief; where else could you convince your CFO to abseil down the side of Head Office?!

How much responsibility are you given?
There is no restriction to the responsibility you can have on the graduate programme. Graduates are very much empowered from the very first day so that you can quickly make an impact on the business.

Tell me about the training you received when you joined.
It was also quite helpful that early on we could have external training on systems such as Excel, which was great as it is so important to your everyday job.

The graduate programme also recognises the importance of such development, and there are a number of highlighted courses that will enhance and develop your skills as you become more experienced in the business.

Tell me about your career progression/on-going development with TJX Europe.
I have been with TJX Europe for two years, having spent the first year in the Commercial Finance Function and the second year in the Financial Control Group. The rotational nature of the programme is structured so that you gain exposure to each financial pillar. This structure allows you to see each function in depth and creates a well-rounded understanding of Finance as a whole.

Whilst also gaining practical on-the-job skills, I am studying towards the CIMA qualification. Combined with my experience in the company I will be able to qualify as a Financial Analyst at the end of the programme.
